Artificial Intelligence Policy

Purpose and Scope

AL-ADABIYAH: Jurnal Pendidikan Agama Islam recognises the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) and generative AI tools, including large language models (LLMs), in research and academic writing.

This policy establishes requirements for responsible, transparent, and ethical AI use in manuscript preparation, editorial assessment, and peer review. It applies to authors, reviewers, and editors and supports research integrity, human accountability, originality, and confidentiality.

Principles of Responsible AI Use

The journal adopts the following principles:

  1. Human Accountability
Authors, reviewers, and editors remain responsible for their contributions and decisions. Authors must verify the accuracy, originality, and reliability of all submitted content, including material prepared with AI assistance.

  2. Transparency
Authors must disclose AI use in manuscript preparation or research, explaining the tools used and their purposes.

  3. Integrity and Originality
AI use must not compromise the validity of research, misrepresent intellectual contributions, or introduce fabricated information.

  4. Non-Authorship of AI
AI tools must not be listed as authors or co-authors because they cannot fulfil authorship responsibilities or take accountability for published work.

Permitted Uses of Artificial Intelligence

Authors may use AI as a supporting tool for:

  1. Language editing, proofreading, translation, and improvements to readability.

  2. Reference organisation and citation formatting, provided that authors independently verify every reference.

  3. Similarity checking and identification of potential textual overlap.

  4. Data organisation, statistical assistance, coding, and visualisation, subject to appropriate methodological validation and human oversight.

These uses must support the authors’ work without replacing their substantive intellectual contribution. Authors remain responsible for research design, scholarly arguments, interpretation, and conclusions. AI-assisted research methods must be described sufficiently to enable evaluation and, where applicable, reproducibility.

Prohibited Uses of Artificial Intelligence

The following practices are prohibited:

  1. Using AI to replace human intellectual contribution in developing research questions, theoretical frameworks, methodologies, interpretations, discussions, or conclusions.

  2. Fabricating, falsifying, or deceptively manipulating data, findings, images, quotations, or references.

  3. Submitting manuscripts substantially generated by AI as original human scholarship.

  4. Failing to disclose AI use as required by this policy.

  5. Uploading confidential manuscripts, personal data, or unpublished research materials to AI services without appropriate authorisation and data protection safeguards.

AI-generated material must never be presented as observed research evidence or used to conceal the absence of research.

Disclosure Requirements

Authors must include an AI Disclosure Statement in the manuscript when AI tools have been used in research or manuscript preparation. The statement must:

  1. Identify the tool and its version, where available.

  2. Explain the purpose and extent of its use.

  3. Describe how the authors checked and validated the outputs.

  4. Confirm that the authors retain full responsibility for the manuscript.

AI use affecting research methods or data analysis must also be explained in the Methods section.

An example disclosure is:

“During manuscript preparation, the authors used [tool name and version] for [specific purpose]. All outputs were reviewed and verified by the authors, who take full responsibility for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of the manuscript.”

Where no AI tools were used, authors may state:

“The authors declare that no AI tools were used in conducting the research or preparing this manuscript.”

Ethical and Legal Considerations

Authors must ensure that AI use complies with applicable research ethics, copyright, intellectual property, and data protection requirements. Confidential information and personal data must be protected throughout the research and publication process.

Suspected plagiarism, fabricated references, data falsification, or other misconduct involving AI will be addressed under the journal’s Publication Ethics policy.

Editorial and Peer Review Policy

All submissions undergo the journal’s editorial assessment and double-blind peer review process. Disclosed and permitted AI use does not by itself determine acceptance or rejection. Editorial decisions remain based on scholarly merit, originality, methodological quality, relevance, and compliance with journal policies.

Reviewers and editors must maintain manuscript confidentiality. They must not upload submitted manuscripts or review reports to external generative AI services without explicit journal authorisation and adequate confidentiality safeguards.

AI must not replace reviewers’ critical assessment or editors’ judgement. Reviewers and editors remain accountable for their evaluations, recommendations, and decisions.

Compliance and Corrective Action

Suspected violations will be assessed according to their nature and severity, with authors given an opportunity to respond. Appropriate action may include:

  1. Requests for clarification, disclosure, or revision.

  2. Manuscript rejection.

  3. Publication of a correction or retraction when warranted.

  4. Notification to the relevant institutions in cases of serious suspected research misconduct.

Policy Review and Updates

The journal will periodically review this policy in response to developments in AI technologies, research practices, and publication ethics guidance. Updates will be published on the journal’s website.
